Traditional Land Use
Process & Portal

The Consultation Process:  An Overview

The process includes an electronic database (“portal”) for developers to provide information about their planned activities within their Traditional Territory. A database is an essential tool for providing information to the Nations about resource development activities. However, the database by itself does not constitute a “consultation process”.

We are hoping to share an “internal process” to review information from the database, obtain input from Elders and other Traditional Knowledge Holders, and provide feedback to government and industry about the impacts of resource development activities on traditional lands and resources. A similar “internal process” needs to be in place in order for the Nation to use and benefit from the consultation process.

The TLU Portal

Four Winds & Associates is currently engaged in the TLU initiative with a number of First Nation and communities and all eight Metis Settlements in Alberta.  The purpose is to assist the individual communities to enhance/strengthen their individual consultation processes and to provide a Traditional Land Use Industry Application Portal that helps each of the communities to manage their traditional land use data and industry applications for development.
OVERVIEW
Traditional Land Use Industry Application Portal is a contemporary tool for First Nation consultation and helps the communities manage their traditional land use data and industry applications for development.
